Scaler has been flaky since I bought it, but this morning it got to a point where it would crash Ableton if I clicked anywhere in the plugin. This happened in two projects back to back. The first project wasn’t saved and when I tried to recover it, Ableton crashed immediately. The second one I saved carefully and now it loads but if I click a Pattern button or the close button Ableton crashes.

Hi, I turned off OpenGL, but it still crashed.
Did it ever work right? An earlier version?
It has always been flaky. But yesterday was the worst where I had two projects in a row that became unusable / lost work. I have only tried this one version. I purchased it recently, maybe a week or two ago. Plugin Boutique only has version 2.7.3.
I’m running the same OS and Live and Scaler and have zero problems. Maybe @davide or @Ed1 can get you and earlier version to try. Maybe try reinstalling Scaler.
Likewise, but I have other VSTs that crash Live.
I reinstalled Scaler. I opened my session backup file. I clicked on the Pattern 1 button and it crashes.
I believe it was a lack of hard drive space. I cleaned that up and now Scaler seems stable. I haven’t gone back to that project that was crashing, but I will test it out soon.
My second guess is installing blackhole and creating aggregate audio interfaces. I saw crashes when changing Ableton’s audio config, but I think this is unrelated.
At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs, may I recommend that you should never use more than 70% of your hard disk, especially the primary drive that has the OS installed on it (i.e. make sure you have at least 30% free space on your disk).
I would also recommend carrying out regular disk cleanups and optimisation (defragmentation) to remove junk files that are left lying around when programs close (they should be deleted but…). This could also improve performance by reorganising the physical locations of files to a more optimal location.
Even if you are not installing lots of new programs, as you install updates the disk becomes more fragmented (less optimally organised) and should be defragmented periodically. You may need a significant amount of free space to do this as the process reorganises the physical locations of files.
Never defrag an SSD though. Very bad idea. SSDs don’t get fragmented because of their architecture.
But I think you do still have to mange the disk space and clean up junk.
Of course. Junk is junk regardless of the type of drive. Defraging is only good on spinning platter drives though.
True, just showing my age and thinknig of HDD But I think you still want to ensure that you do not over utilise the drive.
