A good non KK piano that is not a RAM-sucker?

As you may have realized, I am reselling my Toontrack licenses

For bass & drums I am done with UJAM basses and Jamstick, and I have also AAS Lounge Lizard for electric pianos, and VB-III for the Hammond, but I need a piano

I bought some time ago the Sampleson Metapiano, but the sound is dull, very dull, so can somebody suggest a way to make it shining with external effects?

Or, do you know a good alternative that doesn’t rely on KK, is not a RAM-sucker, is stable on Ableton Live 11 and Cantabile, and doesn’t cost me a kidney?

Native has good sounding pianos. I have them all. For example, Noire is really good.

Thanks, but Native is KK based…
And, it is sample-based so a RAM-sucker by definition

Hi ClaudioPorcellana,

Try some EQ on your Sampleson Metapiano. If that doesn’t help, maybe Trial the Korg M1 plugin. There are quite a few Pianos on there! :slightly_smiling_face:

Arturia Piano V3 is the excellent choice, not KK, on sale several times a year. Currently $124, but occasionnaly goes for $79 or so. I have been used it for many years. The sound is great, there are many pianos, from classic to electric (see image).

Thanks for both tips

I am currently testing Pianoteq and the 2 UJAMs grand and upright

The sound of Pianoteq is very good, but I have to rely on Scaler to play something decent because there are no precooked patterns

The sound of the 2 UJAMs is too much fancy, they waste my little RAM, but I can have many patterns and arpeggios with little effort

It’s always hard to balance pros & cons, and now I have to test the others you suggested

I’ll let you know

Well, I think that I’ll go for the 2 UJAM pianos because the RAM sucked is low: about 5 GB jamming in Cantabile with one UJAM piano, one UJAM bass, and one UJAM drums

and also because I can play them by hand (well, one hand only, while Scaler send chords) and I can play them with more or less help using precooked riffs

The general problem with many, if not all the plugins, is that the demo songs are misleading because they rely more or less deeply on external effects

This is why I read that Pro musicians usually listen plugins raw, i.e. without any effect on, when devs leave them to remove internal effects, clearly…

The Arturia is a good example: the demo songs shine, but the plugin output is dull, very dull compared to Pianoteq that is considered one of the best by many keyboard players that populate the Cantabile or other fora

The Arturia has another severe issue BTW: only the interface can be enlarged, not the fonts; so if I enlarge the GUI enough to read the text, the GUI comes out of my screen

The Korg M1 plugin has no demo apparently, so I didn’t test it

BTW, many UJAM plugins, not just pianos, are currently discounted

Reaper + UJAM Legend + UJAM Dandy + Virtual Piano = 3.505 GB
Reaper + UJAM Legend + UJAM Dandy + Arturia Piano V3 = 3.209 GB

I’ll send you a few samples of my playing. And no, I am not a pro. I am even lower level than amateur in piano.

@ClaudioPorcellana This is the link to my test with several piano presets from Arturia Piano 3.

As I mentioned, I am beginner on piano so there are errors, but I wanted to give you an idea how Piano V3 might sound. There are dozens of presets and these are only a few.

Bass & Drums = UJAM

Yes, it seems to me also that UJAM pianos suck more

Anyway, I followed the Studio-dbfx tip, and it worked: the Metapiano sound is way better with a few effects onto it, so I think I’ll keep it for now, waiting some big discount for another, likely Pianoteq

The problem with Arturia Piano V3 is that its fonts are barely readable for me

By dragiing the lower right corner, you can make the entire interface huuuuge!

Sure
So huge that it comes out of my monitor, so useless
I need to enlarge fonts only, not the whole window

If you don’t need detailed control over the Piano sound, you could just use Arturia Analog Lab. It’s even cheaper and it contains a few Arturia Piano presets (and a lot of other synths as well). You can only fiddle with some predefined macro knobs, though. Since the UI is very simplified, maybe it suits you better?

But my personal favorite is clearly Pianoteq.

Thanks, I’ll check it

There’s also a free one. The full version contains much more presets, though.

Arturia - Analog Lab

Since Arturia has no license transfer fees, you can get Analog Lab Pro rather cheap on Knobcloud and the like.

Thanks, I only hope the interface font can be enlarged independently of the interface, because this is the reason why I don’t like Arturia Piano V3

Chaning font-size independent from the UI size is very unusual. That would be an interface designers nightmare, actually

What plugins / UI do support that?

Most softwares I use, for job and for fun

I meant the total RAM needed for my hybrid system
It is not dedicated to music, but I use it for work and for fun, so there are always other pieces of software that suck part of the available RAM
