Hello, I’m wondering if there’s a way I can be playing virtual instruments while seeing the chords from Scaler on my Push 2 pads. I’m new to chords so ideally, when I press on chords in Scaler, I would see the pads of the chord light up. I thought the Scaler audio version would help but it doesn’t.
Or at least, when I play the Scaler 2 instruments, can I see the Push 2 pads flashing?
Hi @seraca, welcome to the forum. I think I get what you’re trying to accomplish and it should be possible, but may be a bit fiddly to setup. The method will also depend on which DAW you’re using. You will need to use the Scaler 2 VST plugin not the AU plugin to route MIDI from Scaler 2 to another track.
In Ableton Live which is what I’m familiar with, you can add the Scaler 2 VST instrument plugin (not Scaler 2 Audio) to a MIDI track, then add another virtual instrument to another MIDI track. Set the non Scaler 2 MIDI track’s ‘MIDI From’ option in the I/O section to ‘Scaler2 - Scaler2’ (top and bottom menus) and set the Monitor mode to auto and record arm the track.
Now Push 2 should be displaying MIDI notes sent to that track. So with Scaler 2 window open you should be able to trigger chords by clicking the chord pads which will trigger your external instrument plugin, and the notes of those chords should be illuminated on Push 2. So long as that track is record armed. Alternatively you can set the monitor mode to ’In’ and click on the track to select it.
You can also record arm both MIDI tracks and use bound notes in Scaler 2 to trigger chords using Push 2 and still see the triggered notes being illuminated. There may be other ways to accomplish this, but this certainly works for me.
thanks Tristan I think the issue is that Ableton does not send the signal back to Push 2. It stays in ableton. I had tried a similar method as the one you are suggestion except for the “auto” and arming the track. Still doesn’t work. I’m able to control my virtual instruments directly from Scaler 2 but nothing lights up on my push 2 pads.
Hi Carl. Scaler 2 is an Instrument plugin which is why your MIDI track’s output changes to an audio output. Ableton Live doesn’t actually support MIDI effect plugins, just MIDI effect Devices i.e. those made by Ableton or using Max for Live. Not plugins though.
Make sure you follow all the steps I suggested, it is certainly all working for me. You’re welcome to post a video of how you have things setup if you need any further help getting it going.
