Hi pals
Having plenty of RAM I decided to test again Bitwig and Reaper with the set I use for jamming: Scaler 2 + UJAM Virtual Pianist + UJAM Dandy + Jamstix
Well, I found that all the 3 DAWs with that set suck the same amount of RAM (about 30% of my 32 GB), so I confirm that sample-based plugins are the culprits for my crashes, NOT the DAWs
But I was very surprised to find that Ableton Live 11 performed better than Bitwig at the audio management level, with the meaning that using Bitwig I had crackles and momentary crashes of the audio engine even using the max 2048 buffer!
I have to say that my system, after having closed all un-necessary tools, sucks about 15 GB, so the RAM sucked by the set above is actually lower
BTW, now that the RAM amount is no more a problem, I found that also my CPU (or some buggy part of the system) is unable to cope with sample-based tools, YUK
Well, I’ll have to find a way to circumvent this issue that is mostly linked to jamming with UJAM plugins
Creating one track at a time and freezing it is mandatory, but I don’t like that for jamming because I cannot audit multiple patterns, because tracks that receive MIDIs from another tool selected cannot be frozen
any suggestion?
Well, I tried an odd thing just now
I switched to Wasapi instead of the ASIO driver, in Cantabile clearly: the CPU use decreased enormously with the same set above and using a buffer as little as 512!
Unbelievable
I’ll go on testing and I’ll let you know
Cool!
Never been able to have these results with ASIO
And my set is even more complex
Unfortunately, Ableton Live doesn’t accept Wasapi, but Cantabile does
Well, I found that my antivirus check were scheduled in the same hours I usually play, and during those checks there were CPU spikes, the drive was very busy, and there was a lot of network traffic
I changed the time, all issues are gone, and I had zero crashes
